Royal British Legion
The Grewelthorpe Ex-Servicemen's Association was formed in 1924, became a branch of The British Legion in 1929 and was later granted a Charter to become the Royal British Legion in 1971. The Branch continues as a small but active group of around 40 members from the villages of Grewelthorpe and the surrounding area; a detailed history can be found on the Village Website at www.grewelthorpe.org.uk.
The Branch aims to maintain the principles of the British Legion as set out in the Royal Charter and provide support to its objectives:
To perpetuate the memory of sacrifices made during service with the Armed Forces in war and peace;
To relieve need, suffering and distress of Beneficiaries and their Dependants and to further the education of Beneficiaries and their Dependants;
To relieve need and protect the mental and emotional health of the Dependants of Beneficiaries who have died or been severely injured;
To relieve suffering, hardship and distress to Dependants caused by the absence of those serving in the Armed Forces;
To promote and support schemes for the resettlement, rehabilitation, retraining and sheltered employment of Beneficiaries and their Dependants
The Branch membership currently comprises individuals from both military and civilian backgrounds who, in pursuit of the aims outlined above, undertake various voluntary projects in the local area. In recent years much of this effort has been in support of the Lister House Poppy care home in Ripon. However, more recently, the branch restored the Wayside Cross that has been standing in the centre of Grewelthorpe Village for over 100 years and, as part of the 2022 celebration of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee, installed a commemorative bench and ornamental tree by the Village pond. The Branch has also restored several of the existing village benches; two of which were timed to coincide with the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023
Membership of the Royal British Legion is open to all; military service is not a pre-requisite. The feeling of comradeship and esprit de corps derived from being part of an organisation dedicated to helping those who have made great personal sacrifices for their Country is also available to all.
If you would like more information about joining the Grewelthorpe Branch, please contact the Branch Secretary, Edward Threapleton, on threaps62@gmail.com or telephone 01765 658744
